Elska Print no. 887: "Nathan o las i lwyd"
Photographed by Liam Campbell, this portrait is of Nathan J, the 887th subject photographed for Elska, part of our Elska Pristina series.
During the shoot trip in Kosovo, Philip Mowbray, the Elska Pristina issue collaborator, shot one roll of analogue film amongst his mainly digital photography. It inspired me so much that I immediately bought an old camera and some film, and then asked a Welsh chap I found on Insta called Nathan if he'd like to be my first ever film subject. This is my favourite shot from that roll, proof that there's something very special about analogue photography. There's also something very special about black-and-white imagery. I adored Nathan's blue eyes immensely, but even here where the blue goes to grey, I'm no less intoxicated. The title of this print — “Nathan o las i lwyd” — translates from Welsh as “Nathan from blue to grey.”
This photograph was shot on a Pentax MX using Ilford HP5 Plus film, 400 ISO, pushed to 800, developed at Gulabi Film Lab, Glasgow, Scotland
