Elska Print no. 472: "Papercut"

Photographed by Liam Campbell, this portrait is of Jules N, the 472nd subject photographed for Elska, part of our Elska Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) series.

Towards the end of our shoot, Jules opened up his journal to show me some of his drawings. This one was titled ‘Papercut'. It felt like one of the most exposed and intimate moments in any shoot I'd ever done. The story he wrote for the issue, ‘My Drawings Are My Suicide Note’, reveals more about what these sketches mean to him, how much they have served as a way to keep going, keep motivated, and stay alive.
