Photographed by Mauro Padula, this portrait is of Davide Z, the 921st subject photographed for Elska, part of our Elska Milan series.

This is the image that was chosen for the Elska Milan cover, but its significance goes beyond that. The stairwell itself, with its grand scale and gorgeous blends of marble, terrazzo, wood, and iron inspired a great deal of other shoots from this issue. In addition, it was a bonding over a love of typical Milanese architecture that sparked the collaboration between Liam Campbell and Mauro Padula in the first place. This kinship resulted in the Milan issue being made at all.
