Elska Print no. 826: "Quagga"
Photographed by Liam Campbell, this portrait is of Ángel M, the 826th subject photographed for Elska, part of our Elska Mexico City (Mexico) series.
It often happens that during a shoot, if I notice a tattoo on an elskan, I ask what it is or what it means to that person. In the case of Ángel, I assumed that this drawing was a zebra, but he explained that it was actually a quagga. A quagga is an extinct animal that differs from a zebra in that the stripes are inverted (white on a dark background for a quagga versus black on a light background for a zebra). He got the tattoo in honour of his stretchmarks — this was a motivation that blew me away, so I decided to honour his sentiment with an art print.
