Elska Print no. 442: "Eighth Sister”
Photographed by Liam Campbell, this portrait is of Mateusz M, the 442nd subject photographed for Elska, part of our Elska Warsaw (Poland) series.
Although I normally shoot in cities quite spontaneously, in Warsaw there was one location that I made the effort to specifically use as a backdrop. That was to shoot one of Warsaw's most famous buildings, the Pałac Kultury i Nauki [Palace of Culture and Science]. This is an architectural ‘gift’ from the Soviet Union, which to many renders this building either iconic or an eyesore. In Moscow, a series of similar buildings are known collectively as the ‘seven sisters'; thus I named this image ‘eighth sister'.
