Elska Print no. 041: "Cranes"

Photographed by Liam Campbell and assisted by Andriy Melnyk, this portrait is of Jono D, the 41st subject photographed for Elska, part of our Elska Reykjavík (Iceland) series.

Shot in an apartment on Laugavegur Street where my husband and I often stayed during our frequent visits to Reykjavík in the noughties, I managed to get the apartment's new owner to let us inside for this photoshoot. In the fifteen years since we last stayed here, the skyline had changed a lot, and was continuing to change. I captured this through the reflection of construction sites in the window as I shot Jono. You used to get a clear view to the sea from this balcony, but that was quickly disappearing as tall tower blocks came up.
